Background: During the 1994-1995 school year, Duke had it's worst basketball season in years. Four of the previous five years, Duke had made it to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament. This year, they finished with a losing record.
Any other year, and students would be psyched up ready for the Final Four. But this school year, we'd already gone nearly three weeks without a Duke basketball game. It did seem a little strange. (But even moreso for the seniors, who remembered winning a national championship in 1992.)
I still joke with my friends: Duke cannot be good at both basketball and football. That year, we traded a good basketball season for a good football season, where the football team made it to a bowl. In the years since, my theory has held.
